Shooting-Party Scene
For our first day of shooting, we decided to film the party scene. We asked a few friends to come over, including some of the artist's friends to make him feel more comfortable on camera. We shot this at Andrew's house. Sinead rented a camera, tripod and two lenses from the college to shoot with. We borrowed LED floodlights from friends in the course, and Sinead also made LED lights wrapped around cardboard cylinders for extra lighting.
We asked everyone to come as if they were going to a real party, we used bottles of alcohol and pint glasses of water as props. We rearranged the room so that the couch was centred with the table in front and took out anything that wasn't necessary to take up space. We placed the floodlights behind the camera, facing Dylan, and we chose the colours green and blue as it gave the sense of uneasiness. We also used Sinead's lights behind the couch and at the artist's feet to create depth in the shot, using the colours pink and white. Colour psychology suggests green is something associated with negative emotions, like greed and envy. It's also associated with illness, and in combination with black it can feel uneasy. Dark blue is often associated with stability and trust. It's a colour we often associate with authority, rules and structure. The psychology of these two colours are very contrasting, while visually they feel harmonious. The colour choice is a manifestation between the two parts of the artist that are at odds throughout the song.
The colour pink was also used very subtly in the background. Pink is the artist's favourite colour, and is reflective of what he believes is his true nature underneath that internal conflict. Pink is a calming colour, it's associated with vibrancy and fun. It also has associations with femininity, which is associated with nurturing, caring, warmth and love which is how the artist identifies himself. The light colour is a swirl of all the different aspects you can see in the artist and in the song he's written, and set in the darkness of the room, makes it feel a bit suffocating and overwhelming trying to balance all three.
We took individual shots of Dylan alone, Dylan surrounded by people and introduced our masked character. We also took some long exposure photographs of Dylan using an LED light app on my phone instead of the intense lights we had. We thought we could implement a mixture of photography overlayed onto footage for some shots.
Dylan did a really good job at acting, which helped us immensely. Him and Andrew worked well together as Andrew directed him. We got a variety of shots within a few hours and it ended up being really straight forward and fun.
